PORTALBLAU

A radically human festival

Portalblau '26

This year marks the nineteenth edition of the Portalblau Festival, consolidating a cultural project that, over time, has forged its own identity within the country’s festival scene. Since its inception, Portalblau has been conceived as a meeting place for music, the arts, thought and heritage, deeply rooted in the region that hosts it and open to dialogue with the contemporary world.

Over the years, the festival has grown with the aim of developing a cultural project that goes beyond the artistic programme. Portalblau has gradually established itself as a space where culture is also experienced as a tool for reflection, sensitivity and collective creation. Music, thought, heritage and landscape come together here to generate cultural experiences that connect contemporary creation with history and with Mediterranean identity.

Recent years have been marked by profound transformations that have tested many of the certainties upon which our world had been built. The pandemic radically altered our ways of life and our relationships, and the period that followed has been marked by new global crises, armed conflicts, climate emergencies and geopolitical tensions that highlight the fragility of the international balance

Added to these challenges are rapid technological changes, such as the emergence of artificial intelligence, which raise crucial questions about the future and the role played by the human dimension in this new landscape.

In this complex context, a worrying reality is also emerging with force: the fragility of many rights and freedoms that seemed fully established. Human rights, freedom of expression, democratic coexistence and the values of respect and dignity remain principles that require constant defence. Against this backdrop, culture takes on a fundamental role. Culture is memory, critical thinking and a space for dialogue. It is a space in which society can recognise itself, question itself and imagine possible futures. Cultural projects help to preserve spaces of freedom, reflection and collective sensibility at a historic moment that calls for new ways of interpreting the world.

Based on this conviction, the Portalblau Festival reaffirms its commitment as a cultural project rooted in the local area and attentive to major contemporary debates. We understand culture as a space for encounter, thought and shared responsibility, capable of contributing to a more conscious, fairer and more open society.

THE PROGRAMME

The festival programme reflects this pluralistic and open-minded approach. Portalblau brings together established artists with emerging new voices and fosters a dialogue between different artistic languages, including music, the performing arts, thought and diverse cultural experiences. This diversity of offerings stems from a desire to create spaces for discovery, emotion and shared reflection with the public, whilst always maintaining a balance between artistic quality, cultural sensitivity and the ability to connect with society.

THE VENUES

The landscape and heritage form an essential part of the festival’s identity. The venues hosting the events – in l’Escala, Empúries and other locations in the Empordà region – foster a constant dialogue between artistic creation, historical memory and the Mediterranean landscape. This connection with the surroundings transforms each artistic performance into a cultural experience that brings together music, history and the local area.

PORTALBLAU FESTIVAL PROGRAMMES

Portalblau is also shaped by its own programmes, which broaden its cultural and social scope. Initiatives such as Mirades Blaves, Valores i Compromís and Espai PROA reflect the festival’s commitment to creating spaces for reflection, promoting cultural values and supporting emerging talent.

These programmes help to reinforce the festival’s role as a space for thought, cultural responsibility and commitment to society.

THE BLUE SPACE

This year, the festival’s symbolic universe takes shape in the Espai Blau, inspired by the artistic vision of Mark Rothko. Blue—present in the sea, the sky and the Mediterranean light—becomes an emotional landscape that invites contemplation and a sensory experience of art.

Rothko conceived of colour as a language capable of expressing deep human emotions. Portalblau takes up this intuition and proposes a space where art, landscape and sensitivity engage in dialogue with the public.

After nineteen years, Portalblau has established itself as a cultural project that places culture at the heart of community life. A festival committed to creativity, thought and engagement with the local area, creating spaces for artists, the public and the community to come together.

As cultural agents, we reaffirm our commitment to defending culture as a common good, a space of freedom and a tool for strengthening democratic values, human dignity and respect for rights and freedoms.

We look forward to seeing you there.
